Data leadership skills

Helping leaders to improve understanding of data, strategise and make the most of data within their organisation.

Although primarily aimed at those with a leadership role, a general understanding of the concepts found in data leadership skills may be found in smaller organisations at Data Citizen, Data Worker and Data Professional level.

Driving value from data

Many organisations are at an early stage of their data journey. Before they can truly embark on this, they first need to gain an understanding of how data can transform their organisation or sector. This would be focused on those with a leadership role, helping them to think about what data opportunities exist, potential challenges, and to start to think about what investment and support may be required. This would sit alongside other Data Citizen level learning, with an overview of key uses of data, concepts, job roles etc.

Data strategy and leadership

What data does the organisation have, what data is important, and how can you go about driving value from it? This is what a data strategy seeks to set out – looking at job roles, responsibility, infrastructure, organisational culture, policies, and regulatory compliance – setting out a plan for data-driven innovation. Although primarily aimed at Data Leaders, in smaller organisations this role may be undertaken by Data Workers/Professionals.

Managing a data team

How do you build and manage an effective data science team within an organisation? It is clear that while there is a great deal of enthusiasm about advancing the role of data, not all organisations have a clear understanding of the skills they need and why. This would seek to support Data Leaders, and some Data Professionals, in organisations to identify needs and develop a plan for building and managing a data team.
