Data engineering skills

Before data can be analysed and have meaning taken from it, effective systems and processes need to be in place that enable data to be harvested.

This is the job of data engineers and architects. Data engineers and architects have a hands-on role designing, building and maintaining functional systems. The following skills were identified as a gap during our employer research, therefore have been highlighted here as opportunities that can enable workforce development.

Data engineering

Data engineers develop and maintain data systems. There is a recognised shortage of people with skills in this area, which the employer research confirmed. Data engineers have the knowledge and skills to design, develop, test, evaluate and modify data engineering solutions, choosing appropriate data sources and analysis tools.

Data systems & architecture

Data architects work to specify organisational requirements and design and develop data systems that respond to them. They therefore have a detailed knowledge of the data flow and data processes in an organisation, and can utilise this to support improvements..
